In 1897 the Village Room was dedicated for use as a meeting place for town residents to socialize. The one room building contained books and comfortable places to sit and read, and was considered a model "beneficent social institution" and "the scene of many a happy gathering." The women of Deerfield, Massachusetts, had the Village Room built as a memorial to former Postmistress Martha Goulding Pratt.
