Although the Colonial Revival has been identified as the most influential style of the crafts produced by artisans of the Deerfield, Massachusetts, Arts and Crafts movement, these pieces of pottery by Chauncey Thomas (1877-1950) were clearly inspired by the Art Nouveau movement. Art Nouveau, which began in Europe, modified Japanese designs and styles with a late-19th century European sensibility and a number of other influences to create eclectic but aesthetically pleasing work. Thomas worked and lived in Deerfield for only a few years before moving to California where he helped found California Faience, an influential company in the California Arts and Crafts movement.
