Floats like these, in a parade celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Bernardston, Massachusetts, in 1912, are an American custom dating back to the 18th century. Although engines rather than horses power floats today, parade floats are an American custom dating back to the 18th century. The telephone poles and wires in the photograph reveal how communication and electrification wires changed the landscape of towns and cities by the turn of the 20th century.
