Men were the primary woodworkers among Algonquian cultural groups in what is now New England. This gouge's size indicates its use in large woodworking projects, such as creating a dugout canoe. These canoes were often made of hollowed out pine logs. The center was burnt and the charcoal was chiseled out with gouges like this one. Smaller gouges would have been used for projects like making bowls for food.
