The practical need for wood splint baskets diminished in many American households by the later 19th century. Native craftspeople responded by devising more decorative forms. Jeanne Brink, an Abenaki basketmaker from Vermont, made this modern wood splint basket. She is a member of a family of well-known Abenaki basket makers, the Obomsawins. Jeanne learned her craft from her grandparents, aunts, and uncles who sold baskets to tourists at Thompson's Point resort on Lake Champlain.
