When author Emma Lewis Coleman wrote this Deerfield, Massachusetts, tourist guide, she lived in the Frary House in the center of town. In her guide she included stories of homesteads and the Albany Road burying ground that were part of the town's history as an English settlement, names of the area's common birds, trees, and wildflowers, and a chapter on the town's handcraft industries. She spoke of "two distinct movements in Deerfield's industries." The first took place about 1760. The second, occurring at the time she wrote the guide, profited from "the general interest in Arts and Crafts" (a reference to the turn-of-the-20th-century Arts and Crafts Movement) and a ready market "because visitors have always been attracted by the natural beauty and historic interest of Deerfield."
