Under a 100-foot long tent in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Gov. Jonathan Belcher met with members of five Indian groups in August 1735. The Governor informed the Natives that information from England assures that peace continues between King George and the French king. However, "if there should happen to be a war between them," the Governor wants assurance that the Indians will fight on the side of England. Joseph Kellogg acted as interpreter and gifts of wampum were exchanged. At the end of the week, the Reverend John Sargent was ordained as minister to the Stockbridge Indians.
