Salah Barnard served in the army throughout the French and Indian wars and returned to Deerfield in 1765 with the commission of major. This journal was kept by Major Barnard at Albany, New York, in May of 1760, and details incidents regarding an "expedition under Col. Haviland against Canada" and "General Amherst by Mohawk River." The spelling is irregular, to say the least, but is not unusual for the time period. Upon his return to Deerfield, he restored an old house and kept a store and, like most of the men in town, practiced farming.
