The Mannerist design and evidence of the former vibrant original colors are two indications of the 17th century taste displayed when this cushion cover was made at the Sheldon Tapestry Factory in England. This rare survivor of a fragile medium was brought to Massachusetts by the Reverend Edward Taylor in 1668. Edward Taylor studied divinity at Harvard and became the minister of Westfield, Massachusetts. He wrote poetry throughout his life and was among the finest Colonial poets. His poems remained unpublished until 1939, when they were heralded as one of the great literary discoveries of the 20th century. His grandson, the Reverend John Taylor, who was Deerfield's minister from 1787 to 1806, presented the tapestry to the Deerfield Academy Museum.
