The iron peel, made by a blacksmith of wrought iron, was a necessity around the kitchen fireplace. It could function as a fire tool to move pieces of wood, as a shovel to remove ashes, and to place and remove food from the deep cavities of the wall ovens. The long handle helped to keep the user at a distance from the hot wood fire. Many times the blacksmith used his artistic talents to create a handle that was beautiful as well as useful.
