Samuel Danforth (1774-1816) of Hartford, Connecticut, was one of the last makers of lidded tankards. He moved to Hartford about 1795 and became the most productive and inventive craftsman of his generation. Nineteen members of his family over five generations were involved in the production of pewter. Tankards were used for strong drink at home and sometimes, in church, for communion.
