Glass lamps, often impressed with designs like this one with harps or lyres, and sometimes fitted with a handle, held liquid burning fluids for illumination. Because of the tilted double wicks and their covers, this one was probably intended to burn camphene (camphine), the commercial name of an illuminating oil procured by distillation of common turpentine. The covers slowed down the evaporation of the liquid.
