The Lower Suspension Bridge connected Turners Falls, Massachusetts, with Greenfield, Massachusetts. It was completed in May, 1872. There may have been some reluctance among the owners of Turners Falls to allow a bridge to be completed, since they never officially allowed a connection into the city to be built. One was, however, eventually built, but only several weeks after the bridge was finished. The bridge stood until the great flood of 1936, which damaged enough that it had to be replaced.
