Julia Snow was a librarian in Greenfield when the First World War hit. She recorded the effects of the war on her town, taking pictures of the men who enlisted and when they left town. Soon after the start of the war, she decided to take an opportunity to serve and she joined the Red Cross. Like Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield, in a very short time she found herself far from her home town. By the end of the year, she was in Washington, D.C., serving at Walter Reed Hospital, probably the military's most important medical institution. The more seriously wounded of the war were shipped back to the United States for convalescence. Here, two Irish soldiers, Cleary (left) and Cligget, pose for her. Cligget, who was an embalmer in civilian life, told her, perhaps tongue in cheek, that he would (in the words Julia recorded), "Leave his 'appy 'home" for her "any time."
