Greenfield-based Dr. Charles Canedy, although forty years old, joined the U.S. Army in August, 1917, four months after the U.S. entry into World War I. He was sent with the U.S. expeditionary force to Russia in September, 1918, a part of an international force to fight the Bolshevik (later Soviet) government in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Canedy took a picture of this coastal bunker in Siberia. Its metal cap was intended to protect it from mortar (vertical) fire, but its masonry walls would have been easily breached by most modern artillery. As such, it was intended to provide short-term protection for pickets.
