Although Mary E. Allen is best known for her work in the field of artistic photography with her sister Frances, she was also active in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Deerfield, Massachusetts. She was one of the four founding members of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework and created the mark of quality, "D" within a flax wheel, that was stitched onto every item of needlework offered for sale by the Society. She also served as the treasurer of the Deerfield Industries from 1901 to 1919. Frances Allen took this photograph of her sister in about 1913.
