Frances and Mary Allen's photograph of a young "Puritan" girl reading is typical of the way in which the sisters' turn-of the-century photographs made New England's past seem quaint and familiar. The Allens provided the clothing their models wore, and they carefully chose the lighting and mood. The book the girl holds reminds the viewer of the important role reading played in Puritan life.
