Dutch traders introduced glass beads into the Northeast during the 17th and 18th centuries. Glass beads were used as objects of trade and exchange between Europeans and Native peoples. They were primarily made in Amsterdam and Italy. Tubular glass beads were introduced between 1625 and 1660 and used as an imitation of wampum, shell beads made by Native Americans. Longer tubular beads like this one were made between 1660 and 1677.
