A mukak is a stitched bark container. This one is made of birch bark that has been sewn together with spruce root, and it has a leather strap. The floral and leaf designs have been etched into the bark. The shape of this basket indicates that it was traditionally used for gathering berries. It was made by Roger Echaquan (Attikanek [Tete de Boule]), Manouane, Quebec, in 1992. Echaquan's craft is a continuation of a long and enduring tradition of making birch bark mukaks.
