Because they picture a spot as seen from above, views such as this were commonly known as birds-eye views. This print of Greenfield, Massachusetts, shows the town near the end of the 19th century. The town's 7 churches, its banks, hotels and government buildings all show a busy, lively community. Many factories and mills appear along the Green River along with one of the 2 railroad lines that serviced the town. A monument to Greenfield's Civil War soldiers is in a central place in the business district.
