The tall clock is fitted with a thirty-hour wooden movement produced by reputable makers, often in Connecticut, and sold by peddlers. Its best feature, however, is the elaborately grain-painted pine case, probably made by a local woodworker. The graining was intended to suggest exotic woods; the skirt is further embellished with a colorful painted pinwheel. Timepieces were becoming more affordable and more commonplace in the 19th century; this one was owned by Orlando Ware (1779-1860), who placed it in his Deerfield, Massachusetts, general store facing the town Common.
