Lake Pleasant in Montague, Massachusetts, was a local tourist spot for those who enjoyed its peaceful setting and beautiful lake. The New England Spiritualist Association (people who believed the dead could communicate to the living through a middle person or "medium") bought the Lake Pleasant property in 1876. It became for the next fifty years a yearly place to visit for thousands of Spiritualists who wished to combine the summer pleasures of camping with lectures on Spiritualism and seances conducted by certified mediums.
