James Wells Champney was a prolific genre artist who studied in Boston, Paris, Antwerp and Rome before settling in Deerfield for a while. He taught art at Smith College from 1877 to 1884.

James Wells Champney illustrated all of his wife Elizabeth Champney's literary works. She first published in 1873, just six months after they were married.
