Woven of blue silk damask with a lining of ivory silk, this blanket was reserved for the special occasions of christenings. Christening, the act of baptism, was a sacrament often administered to young babies which admitted them to Christianity. Family tradition says that this blanket, approximately three feet by four feet, was used for the children of Hannah and Elijah Dwight who married in Greenfield, Massachusetts in 1774.
