On September 19, 1677, Pocumtuck and Norwottuck Indians attacked Hatfield, Massachusetts, a town south of Deerfield. They lived in a Native American village 2 or 3 miles from Sorel, a French town in Canada, and they took a number of town people captive and took them back to Canada. These were the first English captives taken there. The group was redeemed the next May and this shoe was, according to a family story, worn home by one of the captives, 4-year-old Sarah Coleman.
