By 1800, many people bought fabric but some women and girls also still used tape looms to weave narrow bands, or "tape". The weaver held the loom between her knees as she worked. Some uses of tapes included garters to hold up stockings or fancy edging for other materials and clothing such as hats. The heart carved into this tape loom probably means that a loving male friend or relative made it.
