This pearlware plate, made in the Staffordshire district of Great Britain, was made for export to America about 1820. Thousands of similar plates were sent to ports on the eastern seaboard to be sold throughout the new United States. This example, made by Enoch Wood and Sons, was particularly appropriate for residents of Massachusetts since the title is "Landing of the Fathers at Plymouth," celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Plymouth landing. The event and the 1620 date are familiar ones to every school child in New England, as well as in other parts of the country to the west, if not in the South, where Jamestown, Virginia, takes precedence.
