Summary and Objective
By utilizing their existing knowledge of furniture, students will compare and contrast furniture used by early Americans and ancient Egyptians, keeping in mind functionality and comfort. The goal is for students to understand that furniture has been used to fulfill some very basic human needs throughout time, and to be able to note changes in furniture design in the three periods being researched. This information will be presented in the form of a poster as an end product.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Students will organize and sort different types of furniture used today. (e.g. couch, dining table, dresser, etc.) Students will write down what the function of each is.
Step 2.
Students will use home decorating magazines to find examples of each of the modern type of furniture as a prototype for a poster.
Step 3.
Students will go through the digital articles from the American Centuries collection, which has pictures and descriptions of early American furniture.
Step 4.
Students will print the pages that have appropriate examples of early American furniture. They will then cut out the furniture examples and use for their poster.
Step 5.
Students will access the four websites and research about Ancient Egyptian furniture. They will again print out appropriate examples of ancient furniture for the poster.
Step 6.
Students will use their own creativity to create a poster that compares and contrasts modern, colonial, and ancient furniture. They must write as well, informing us of the differences in comfort and funtion. They will discover that there was much less furniture used in Ancient Egypt, and will therefore have to inform people of this on their poster.
