Summary and Objective

Students will understand that light and illumination has changed over time. The lesson has a primary focus on practicality. Students will be able to examine scientific devices used for lighting and understand how they relate to a particular time period.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Discussion starter: have students discuss why lighting is needed and what has been used throughout history to accommodate the need for lighting.

Step 2. Group students in pairs and provide each pair with a print-out of all pictures and descriptions in the collection. Be sure to white out or cover up the dates and/or time period.

Step 3. Ask students to place the pictures of various lighting objects in chronological order based on time period in history.

Step 4. Provide each pair with index cards and have the students predict what year the picture corresponds with. Also, on the index cards, have students write a brief description of what they are viewing in the picture and possible uses or improvements they could make to the object. These can be checked with the actual labels of the objects at a later time.

Step 5. Wrap up activity by discussing the practical uses of lighting today.
