On May 7, l945, World War II (WWII) came to an end when Germany surrendered, and May 8 was declared V-E Day (Victory in Europe). Frank Dahowski of Montague, Massachusetts, returned home after the war on the ship SS George Washington, in October of 1945. Due to his life-threatening war injury, he was discharged from the service as a disabled veteran, unable to work when he returned home. Frank and his wife Olga moved to Deerfield after the war, where they built a house on a lot on the Dahowski farm. They were members and supporters of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in South Deerfield. Frank was a volunteer fireman in Old Deerfield and enjoyed his hobby of restoring and selling antique cars. Olga (Ollie to her friends) worked at Greenfield Tap and Die during the war and afterwards, at LaPierre's Electrical Store in Greenfield. They are buried in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery in South Deerfield.
