The art and culture of Japan captured the American imagination at the turn of the century. This embroidery of a rose tree done in a Japanese style was meant to hang on a wall as a picture. The hanging, one foot wide and three feet long, was produced by the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework and exhibited in arts and crafts shows. The Society's symbol and mark of quality, the "D" in a flax wheel, is included in the lower left.
