SOUTH DEERFIELD
TO BUILD NEW SCHOOL-HOUSE
Town Votes to Erect One in South Deerfield at a Cost of $31,000
The adjourned Deerfield town-meeting last evening was called to order at 7 o'clock
by the moderator, P. D. Bridges. Edward A. Rice spoke in regard to the warrant
calling a special town-meeting at 7.30. It was then voted that the meeting be
dissolved. The town clerk then read the call for the special meeting, at which
Mr. Bridges was again elected moderator. The town voted to raise $6000 to repair
Stillwater bridge with steel construction. The meeting was largely attended,
over 200 being present. The matter of building a new school for South Deerfield
created much discussion. After several votes had been taken it was voted to
build a new school-house at a cost of $31,000, including the land. The school
committee was instructed to take under the law of eminent domain the land of
Miss Phila Williams for the site of the school-house and for a playground. It
was also voted to appropriate $200 to pay transportation of pupils attending
the Deerfield academy from the North Mill River district. After much more discussion
relative to school matters and sanitary conditions the meeting was adjourned,
but the appointment of a building committee was left in the hands of the selectmen.

The new South Deerfield School that was to be built, as noted here, replaced a two-story brick building built in the early 1880s that the school district had outgrown. When it was finished the next year in 1913, it was a modern building including central heat, indoor plumbing, and separate school rooms for the classes. In a sense, the building itself represented the growth of the school system in Deerfield and in all of Massachusetts, toward a more specialized and expensive, but more effective system.
