John Clapp, Jr. was born in Deerfield in 1764. At the age of 21 he married Phebe Ross who died in 1803. In December of that year he married the widow Polly Clary of Hadley. Rufus Clary was just 25 years old when cared for in Leverett. Whether he was a stepson or nephew is not clear, but somehow John Clapp, Jr. became his only male relative and responsible for his care. For fourteen weeks he was boarded and cared for in Leverett. The expenses include rum and wine, which may have been used for his relief and the sundries for his daily needs. Why he was buried in Leverett is still a mystery.
