Founded in 1790, the London Missionary Society was the first evangelical organization to send missionaries to the "heathen" of Africa and Asia. In 1802, only seven years after the first American missionary society was formed, the Hampshire Missionary Society was established, drawing members from throughout Old Hampshire County. Their goal was to support ministers and organize churches and schools for departed family and friends who had migrated west to new frontier towns.
