Girls stitched samplers in order to prepare them for a lifetime of sewing that was expected of them. This sampler includes the typical alphabet and numbers, maker's name, and age. It also includes a Biblical verse, proverbs of Solomon 10:1: "A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish son is the heaviness of his Mother." These were deep thoughts for a nine-year-old to contemplate. Sophia Smith (1765-1807) was from Hatfield, Massachusetts. She made this sampler in 1774. Ten years later, she married William Allis, also from Hatfield, MA. They had seven children.
