Believed to be created around 1990, this is a painting by the contemporary artist Robert Merriam of the "Green River Works" in 1834, the first site of the J. Russell Company (later called the John Russell Cutlery Company), located on the banks of the Green River, in Greenfield, Massachusetts. John Russell made his fortune in the cotton industry, but saw new opportunities up North in the field of cutlery. In 1870, the company moved to Turners Falls, Massachusetts.
