The dedication of the soldiers' monument on the Deerfield, Massachusetts, Common took place on Wednesday, September 4, 1867. J. G. Batterson of Hartford, Connecticut, cast the stone obelisk surmounted by a Civil War soldier. The Committee of Arrangements was composed of Josiah Fogg, Charles Arms, George Sheldon, and Nathaniel Hitchcock and the program was printed in nearby Greenfield. The band played, the minister offered a prayer, the audience sang, and odes, speeches, and poems were offered by Deerfield's citizens.
