Stephen West Williams was the son and the grandson of doctors. He studied with his father and at King's College (Columbia University) in New York City. After an apprenticeship in the Berkshires, he returned to Deerfield to practice. His handwritten notes chronicle his medical questions and treatments in an anecdotal manner and register the symptoms and treatments attempted. This example was recorded about 1815. Dr. Williams had a wide practice, lectured extensively, published books on family history and on medical jurisprudence as well as articles in current medical and scientific journals.
