Invoking "poetic prose" common in the Victorian era of George Fuller's life, the novelist William Dean Howells wrote, in 1886, a tribute to the life and works of the artist. George Fuller (1822-1884) attained a national reputation as a painter, but as a young man he had worked in a shoe store, a grocery store, and on his father's farm. Pursuing life as an artist, he studied in Albany and maintained studios in Boston and New York in the 1840s and 50s. Following his father's death in 1859 he returned to Deerfield to assume full responsibility for the family farm. Continuing to paint as he ran the farm he exhibited his work in Boston in 1876. George Fuller died at age 62 at the height of his career.
