Deerfield Men Feed London Pigeons
Two Franklin county soldiers appear to be enjoying themselves as they feed
the pigeons in a London square in this picture which was sent to John Dahowski
of Deerfield by his brother, Sgt. Frank Dahowski.
Sgt. Dahowski is on the left and with him is Sgt. Edward Burakiewicz, whose
home is in South Deerfield.
In a letter which accompanied the picture, Sgt. Dahowski wrote:
"It may interest you to know that the Recorders are reaching me regularly
as a clock and I enjoy them very much. My best friend, Eddie Burakiewicz, from
South Deerfield and myself also enjoy seeing many pictures and write-ups of
fellows we know from around home who have been overseas from one to a dozen
months and feel it is a great honor to have their picture in the paper.
"Eddie and I have been in the same outfit together ever since we both
entered and have been in England and now France and next Berlin, who knows?
"We have both gone through plenty for one another many times because when
we came to France it was plenty hot.
The two sergeants entered the service in April, 1942, and trained with the
engineers at Camp Claiborne, La., and Ft. Dix, N. J. They arrived in France
on time for the first invasion and have been moving steadily ahead with the
advancing allied armies. |

There is currently no available "Beginner" label. The following is the default level label: Frank R. Dahowski, Jr., was born in 1910, and was one of eight children of Frank and Sophie Dahowski, emigrants from Warsaw, Poland in 1898, and residents of Montague, Massachusetts. During World War II (WWII) Frank was a sergeant, but due to his life-threatening war-time injury, he was discharged from the service on October 20, 1945, as a disabled veteran, unable to work when he returned home. Sergeant Dahowski sent this picture of himself (left) and his best friend, Sergeant Edward Burakiewicz, of South Deerfield, to Frank's brother John Dahowski of Deerfield, Massachusetts. It appeared, along with an article about Frank and John, in the February 1945 Greenfield Recorder-Gazette newspaper. The article indicates that "the two sergeants entered the service in April, 1942, and trained with the engineers at Camp Claiborne, LA., and Ft. Dix, N.J. They arrived in France on time for the first invasion and have been moving steadily ahead with the advancing allied armies."
